February 7, 2012
On Safer Internet Day, February 7, simultaneous open lessons on internet safety were held in 150 secondary schools across Armenia. Within the framework of the month-long Safer Internet Armenia 2012 project, numerous events are being organized in different regions of the country by the Media Education Center NGO, and Orange Armenia, in partnership with the Yerevan City Municipality, Internet Society of Armenia and the National Center of Educational Technologies of the Ministry of Education and Science.
According to Bruno Duthoit, CEO of Orange Armenia, software solutions alone are not sufficient to ensure complete online protection for users.
“In Armenia, we provide internet services, and our leading position in mobile internet gives us greater responsibility to support, educate, and guide customers in the safe use of the internet. As part of our corporate social responsibility, we have joined this initiative with great pleasure, as it aims to provide the keys to safe internet use,”
Mr. Duthoit said during an internet safety lesson held at Yerevan Secondary School named after John Kirakosyan.
The project aims to provide children, parents, teachers, and students with essential educational materials, highlighting how to use new technologies safely and effectively in everyday life and learning. Around 200 secondary school teachers have been trained, and a new teaching module titled “Safer Internet for Teachers” has been introduced in Armenian schools. An educational portfolio has also been developed and distributed among secondary school students.
In addition, round tables and workshops will be organized at regional universities in Vanadzor, Ijevan, and Gavar. A video clip contest titled “Safer Internet: Connecting Generations” has been announced for secondary school students.
Armenian users can learn more about both internet-related risks and opportunities by visiting www.safe.am , which provides practical advice and resources for parents, children, teenagers, and teachers on safer and more responsible online behavior.
Safer Internet Day (SID) is organized by Insafe each February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technologies and mobile phones, especially among children and young people worldwide. Across Europe and beyond, thousands of activities are organized around a central theme, demonstrating how new technologies can help connect generations. The campaign encourages users of all ages to work together to create positive online experiences, share knowledge and wisdom, and support one another when online situations become risky or problematic.
